An Old Hero
That’s a potentially misleading title, probably. But one thing’s for sure - We have a new character, and he needs a name. Suggestions, anyone?

Nice! This story keeps getting more interesting.
Something in his demeanor says “Boris” to me. Possibly. Although that expression on his face is more French, but I can’t think of an intimidating French name.

I think… Francois. That’s so nicely French and contradicts his obvious level of education.
Also, did the Professa ever call him Swoop before? Or anyone but Swoop’s new friends?

In funny strips (Or movies, or comics or whatever), big guys are not allowed to have big guy names. He should be “Bubbles” or “Bunny” or Eldrick or Fran or maybe his mother wanted a girl and named him “Sue”.

Well, that can’t be good. Even the Professa’ seems to be on his best fishy behavior…just who ARE these fellas from corporate HQ?
Wait, since when was Puff incorporated? There’s a controlling company behind the world’s circuses?
…are they unionized?
That look out the front windshield is a wee bit awkward, but otherwise the art remains exceptional. I really like those steps up into the wagon in panel 3.
Gordon. As in G. Gordon Liddy, only this time the G is for Gorilla, not George. Just let that sink in for a minute, then if it doesn’t suit you, I have a second suggestion: Corrigan. As in Ray Corrigan (real name Raymond Butler), an actor from the early days of film who spent many of his early roles in ape costumes.

If he isn’t named McGrunty I will be severely disappointed; though I would be fine with just Simply “Grunty”

I think he looks like a “Warwick”. No idea or reason why. That’s just what came to mind.
I love the look and feel of this comic, by the way. It is constantly gorgeous.!

with a face like that, I’d say his friends call him “giggles.”
September 10th, 2009 at 8:37 am
hold on now… CORPORATE circus goons? you’d think that would spoil the fun.
September 10th, 2009 at 9:49 am
Hehe, I hate it when I hear from corporate. I don’t think that gorilla will be as nice to Swoop.
September 10th, 2009 at 9:53 am
Somehow, I feel that he should only have a title, not a name. The Expediter, the Manager, the Accountant, the Facilitator - something like that. It doesn’t have to be in English either, though he doesn’t feel like German would be a fitting choice
Definitely not “the Librarian” though.

Raul Dimitri, though I like Frith’s title idea. Like Raul Dimitri, “The Wrench”…’cause y’know…he’s a monkey….wrench…GET IT!? *crickets*

Grogan. Not as grumpy as he seems, but rather a misinterpreted gregarious gorilla

buckles
September 10th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
I’ll second Gordon Liddy.
September 10th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
I agree with `Eldrick` and `Buckles` here!
:D
He surely is the sunshine in the house, isn`t he?
September 11th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
A naming contest! Very old school, wouldn’t “the corporation” prefer a focus group? Buckles is good with “Bucky, my boy” as the familiar. I have to nominate Guido or Rudy though. You’re doing good work!
DW
p.s. I love the squiggle above Max’s hat. A good, inexplicable detail!

@Scan: He was referred to as ‘The Great Swoopdini’ in the flashback comics.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:18 am
George: What? You think Curious George would stay innocent and nice as he grew-up?
September 12th, 2009 at 7:38 am
name suggestion: Jasper!
jasper FTW!!!
September 12th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
You guys are awesome.
I’m really torn between all the great suggestions! Now I can see why couples struggle so much to name their babies - not that I’m calling anyone’s baby a 500 pound gorilla.
September 14th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Nestly: Call him Bosco. That’s such a circus name.
Or if I had my way, I’d call him “Sausage Fingers”. Lol.
September 17th, 2009 at 8:13 am
My first immediate thought when I saw the lovely gorilla dude was “He looks like a Boris.” And he does! I think…

In ‘05, at the Volcanoes Nat’l Park in Rowanda, 30 baby gorillas were given names by the community. Children from the local villages offered suggestions and one was Kunga, which means peacemaker. So Kunga The Peacemaker is my suggestion!
Thanks for the original artwork, Mike - such a great concept - a bonsai boat! Every one of your readers needs to get a leap on the holiday gift giving and order up a Mike Dutton original!
