Grandpa Herb
I had a lot of fun with this page, thanks to Grandpa. Remember him? He was in Flight 6! I had a great time drawing him back then, and I’ve been wanting to introduce him within the Swoopiverse for a while. Of course, now it’s time to check in on our other characters, which we’ll be doing next week…. so I’ll have to hold off on drawing more Grandpa for a while longer.
By the way guys, did you see last week’s blog about the new video my brother made of me drawing a comic page? I’ll be playing with the menu at some point to include a Videos section, but for now, you can watch the latest here. Enjoy, and have a great weekend!

Hmm… “Topobeyer”. I have a feeling that name is not a coincidence.

Well bust my buttons, it’s Grandpa! =D This is too much, he’s such a great character! I wonder what sort’ve role he’s going to play. Is Arianna going to show up too? Way to go and make me pull out my Flight 6 copy again Mike, haha!
Gosh, I love badger characters, I’ve got one myself
Huh, I just re-read the page and was suddenly confused. I read it fine the first time but the second time in lines 2-3 I started reading horizontally instead of vertically. I hope nobody else is having this trouble and that it was just a matter of self-confusion.

You know, I had that exact problem at the very end of the coloring. I started reading lines 2-3 horizontally. I think Grandpa’s overlapping speech balloon in the middle column hopefully directs the flow. Maybe I should do the same in the first column.
p.s. You probably spotted Swoop and Topo in the market scene in Flight?

Indeed I did, and like a menace I pointed it out to like…everyone for the week I was reading it and told them to check out the comic.
Hmm…I just did a strange thing, I completely covered up panel 7 with my hand while reading it and just having the on large white non-boarder panel there made the flow seem so much easier. It’s probably too late in the process to fix it now, so the text bubble movement will most likely still get the desired effect.
o-o Oh hey, what does it say on Grandpa’s hat? That’s new isn’t it?

I broke Grandpa’s balloon in the first column into two parts. The first balloon is bleeding into panel 5. There’s also some black space connecting the panels in the first and third column. I’ve used this in earlier pages, so it’s probably not a bad idea to bring it back once in a while. Hopefully it reads clearer now… and apologies to anyone who was confused by the earlier version.

I love the video about you making a page. I`m blown away about how confident you are with brush and ink. You make it seem so easy. I can`t even draw a straight line with a pen, leave alone a brush. Do you have any advice?

Hehe, I like how Grandpa walks. The story is turning out to be pretty magical. I like it!

Yay ! ^^
Grandpa’ characters was always one of my favorite, for several reasons…
And I’m glad to see him back on One Swoop fell ! ^^
Bravo Mike, can’t wait to see the next pages.

Thanks for the changes, that does make it easier to read.
What exactly is “Flight 6″?

Flight is a comic book anthology that comes out once a year. I have a short story in the 6th volume. You can check it out here:
