Lofty Ambitions

This was originally split into two pages, both posted today, but I’ve merged them into one update for now. The intention of doing two pages this week was to avoid losing momentum in Topo’s little speech since it’s kind of a key moment. And by breaking it up into two separate posts I was killing it just the same.

As for two pages a week…. will that become a regular thing? Not quite yet; this is just a treat. :)

This is by far my favorite page of this comic to date. Firstly, it’s HUGE! I’m in awe of your ability to pull this off and being able to make every moment so skillfully crafted. The transition from the hard and rugged Topo, to the sunset sailing one, and the texture on the toys, plus all the neat closure to many questions. A toy maker seems so fitting I can’t believe I didn’t think about it before, and I love how my interpretation of Topo at the beginning of this story made him feel like an explorer by trade already, his character is so fantastic. I also think that this page should stay at this size if it can, simply because of the transition between the montage with its stylization, in contrast with the second panel on the “second page” with the stylization of the explorer bear toy just makes everything flow so nicely from Topo’s imagination to the toy crafts.

Anyways, so now they’re off to go climb a tree right? Well, how hard could it be?

Oh shoot, I forgot to mention that the title is brilliant as well. Lofty heh. It’s funny because they’re in a loft, being ambitious, about climbing something tall.

  5. Bloodnut

Everyone else said pretty much what I had in mind but I also really like the adevnturer Topo picture right after he starts thinking about it.

I’m glad to be back to the commenting squad after this short absence, keep up the good work, you make us happy :-D

Hey, I found my way here from reallifecomics.com. I’ve got to say, I’m liking what I’m seeing so far. The illustration is great, and thus far I’ve enjoyed the writing immensely. Keep it up and I’m sure you’ll be getting complaints about the weekly nature in no-time. I’m definitely going to add this to my bookmarks.

    Make that ryanestrada.com. It’s 2 am. Happens, I guess.

Hey everyone, thanks for the great comments. You guys make me want to work even harder. :)

WatanabeX - you and me, both.

Shane - Great observation on the “Lofty Ambition” pun. Not that it’s terribly funny or clever, but you made me feel that it was. hehe. Really glad you got some ‘payoff’ in this latest page. Thanks for sticking through it all so far.

Bloodnut - WB to the comment squad. haha. :)

Henrike - Glad to have you on board!

Anuelab - I visited your blog, so I gathered that you speak Spanish. Lofty ambitions are goals that are seemingly unattainable or very highly placed. Like becoming the president, or even tougher, being a successful artist. The double meaning is that Topo’s home can be considered a “loft” because it is multi-level without an actual ceiling separating the floors.

Mr. President - Glad to see you’re enjoying the art and the writing. I’m already complaining about the once a week pace, in fact, I should probably start a separate Facebook group as a petition to get my act together.
Ryan Estrada is great. I’m very happy to see I’ve attracted one of his readers. :)

Swoop is gettin fatter and Topo is ready for an adventure!

  13. Zephyrion

Lol, Swoop plays the worlds smallest violin for you Topo.

  14. Phenoca

Oh - the broken heart is excellent. Nobody else has ever been able to convey music in a comic! This page is so epic.
