Another great one Mike! I agree with Shane - hoping for a book out of this! SO much depth in the artwork and I like the textures on the road in the main panel…
Topo is right, yeah !
I love the way this one is structured, great lay out ! Is there’s something new in your method/approach ? Like the texture in the mid-panel ? I like it anyway.
Bravo, Mike. ^^
I like this comic very much, beautifully drawn, and well written. Topo practically exudes innocence. But… why are some characters animals and others are human? Confusing at first!
Thanks for all the wonderful comments everyone! Wish I could respond to each one, but I hope you’ll accept some general replies for now.
Regarding a print edition - it’ll happen one day, whether a year or five from now! The trouble is building up the archive since it’s only updated one page a week… not to mention the amount of fine tuning I’d have to do…. I mean, take a look at Topo from week 2, versus now. You’d think I was learning to draw him for the first time each week!
Puck asks why talking animals and humans co-exist in this world, because it’s confusing at first. The short answer is: All will be explained. In the meantime, the validation I use to get away with it is: Disney and Miyazaki did it. So can I!
New textures? - There’s actually some texture work throughout most of the comic. The sky, for instance, is hardly ever purely digital. I have a sky I painted in gouache, scanned in, and use to blend in with the digital portion. I also painted and scanned a bark texture for the large tree seen pretty early on. Perhaps the road texture sticks out because it’s in the foreground. As for anything else new…. I’ve set up a second monitor alongside my laptop…. it’s bigger and wider so I enjoy painting on it, but unfortunately the colors are a bit (way) off (I need to buy a huey calibrator). I switch the image between both monitors to make adjustments, but I’m still not satisfied with the results.
Tristan - I highly doubt it, but I’m seriously thrilled to know that’s how you feel about my comic.
Dave - That was dead-on the inspiration for this page. One of my favorite memories.
Hey Mike,
One Swoop Fell is really awesome! I just caught up, and am really loving all the colors. Can’t wait till you guys start climbing the mammoth tree!
Christine and I were wondering what happened to you this past Thurs. so I went to look on your sites and found you pulled your hammmy. Poo! I hope you are getting better. Talk soon.

I think it looks just fine. Sure, you drew him a bit differently, but so what? It still looks great, and nobody will confuse the two.
Karl Kerschl has some thoughts about “tweaking artwork” that I think apply to One Swoop Fell just as much:

Hmm.You have me wondering about the letter being mailed to Topo; it is obviously of importance.
I must agree with everyone, as well: the artwork is simply gorgeous.
